These Banana Muffins are easy, delicious and quick to prepare. Plus, you probably have everything you need to make them in your kitchen right now. A favourite with kids and adults alike, these moist muffins are sure to please.
I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t love my Banana Muffins. I have many loyal followers who’ve been making these since day 1 – that’s nearly 14 years now!
Between the mixing and baking, the entire process only takes about 30 minutes.

Ingredients
- 3 or 4 large bananas, mashed (the more bananas the moister)
- 1/2 cup white sugar (original recipe calls for 1 cup, but I don’t like them too sweet)
- 1 egg, slightly beaten (or equal amount of egg replacer)
- 1/3 cup melted margarine or butter
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups flour
A Quick Note About Substitutions
These days it is common for folks to need to substitute certain ingredients due to dietary restrictions. If this is the case, this is a great recipe for accommodating substitutions. I’ve made them and forgotten the egg entirely, and they still turned out just fine. Another tip if you are short a banana or two, is to substitute applesauce for one banana. I find about 1/2 cup does the trick. In fact, you can omit the bananas all together to make applesauce muffins!
Instructions
- Mix the mashed banana, sugar, egg and margarine together. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, mix together baking soda, baking powder, salt and flour.
- Mix wet and dry ingredients all together!
- Pour into greased muffin tins.
- Bake in 350 °F (177 °C) oven for approximately 20 minutes.
Your Stand Mixer is Your Best Friend in Baking
I love my mixer, and it’s gotten a lot of use throughout the years. I like to do most of my baking in my mixer because it not only saves time, it makes clean-up that much easier. One bowl to wash up at the end? Yes please!
Traditionally in baking it is important to mix wet and dry ingredients separately, however, I have made this recipe both ways and I have not noticed any difference in their overall taste, so if you’re anything like me, you may wish to just toss it all together.
Baker’s Notes
These Banana Muffins are much more flavourful the next day, and they freeze very nicely too!
If you like walnuts, you can throw a handful of those in there as well for some added flavour and texture, or try adding chocolate chips, or better yet, BOTH. I also add in seasonal fruits like strawberries on occasion.
If you want to spice them up a little, you can add a tsp of cinnamon, and a little nutmeg as well. They smell fantastic baking when you add the spices. I always made mine plain when the kids were little, but they are teenagers now and spice is okay.

I just gave it a shot myself this evening.
Just to disprove to my grandfather that a teenage male can’t cook, I suppose. xD
I had to mix it a bit different. A little more sugar, and we only had two good sized bananas in the kitchen, but they turned out very well. I’m looking forward to another with a bit of butter and a nice cup of coffee for breakfast tomorrow. =)
Thanks for the amazing recipe- these muffins are great!! 🙂
These muffins are amazing!!! I was a little sceptical, but like the other reviews said, they were super easy and so moist and delicious! I used 5 bananas, substituted the butter for coconut oil, added some flax seeds and shredded coconut, and a little cinnamon and vanilla! Healthy and delicious, thanks so much!
This is the exact same recipe passed down to me by my grandmother about 30 years ago. It was always a family favourite and the best darn banana muffin recipe around.
They are the easiest to make and freeze well and are always perfectly golden and moist. I love to add walnuts to some and chocolate chips to others.
I’m going to try it with the apples like someone above mentioned and maybe make a bit of a crumble topping to dab on the top.
Anyone who has not tried these banana muffins yet, will not be disappointed when they do.
I just made these and they were super yum! I substituted some of the flour for oats and added some halved almonds to make banana oat and almond muffins. I am horrible with cooking/baking. When i asked my former roommate to try one she looked at me scared.. but after gobbling it down she asked, “why didn’t you make things like this when we were living together?” HA ha Awesome recipe.
I will repeat what other people have written and say your muffin recipe was fantastic! The second day bought them into work, people were reserving muffins at the start of the day to eat later….it was a hit and a half.
I have a low tolerance for food with a high sugar content. After trying your banana muffins and loving them, I am now going to try your carrot cake recipe.
Thank you 🙂
I’ve just tried your banana muffin recipe. The muffins are delicious…so soft and fluffy!!! My 2 years old son loves it totally. Thanks for the recipe.

Even tho i had to make them with whole wheat flour, they still turned out great!!! mmm, yummmmmmmmm!~!
Thanx O’ bunch!!!
I made these muffins for the first time today, and they are amazing! I substituted 1/3 cup canola oil for the butter, added a bit of ground flaxseed and some fresh blueberries and wow! I wish I’d found this recipe sooner, it’s way better than the one I’d been using. Hope everyone else enjoys it too!

I have one question:
How many muffins does this recipe make?
This recipe is fantastic, thank you for sharing!
I used oil instead of butter, because that was all I had, and threw in a couple of handfuls of semisweet chocolate chips – sooo good!
Steph – about 10-12 muffins.
Thanks!
I Love These muffins
I found your recipe when I googled “banana muffin recipe.” I too had a bunch of old bananas and like you said, had the rest of the ingredients on shelf. They came out great! My husband is not big on sweets but he loved these. Thanks for posting this simple and great tasting recipe.

Thanks cat
They are sooooo good. I am a horrible baker with a horrid oven and these turned out golden brown and delicious. I used a full cup of sugar but next time I think I’ll try 1/2 c with choc chips. Yum!
GREAT muffins, and easy to. I made them with my three year old, and unlike many other recipes we’ve tried there wasn’t much mess. The quicker the recipe the better!!!! I topped then with a cream cheese frosting,(a little sweet) and told my son they were cupcakes =0), he thought they were great!!!!
I made these today with my 3 1/2 year old (and my 1 1/2 year old, who isn’t much help yet). These were, by far, the best banana muffins ever. Easy, fast, and so so yummy. I think I’m going to make more when our bananas are ripe! Thanks!!!
Super fantastic recipe. Thank you for sharing.
I have been making muffins for years and never had I ever made such scrumptious and easy recipe.
I mixed all the ingredients in under 5 mins!
I used self raising flour instead and my muffins took about 25 mins to bake.
AWESOME
OMG! These Muffins are delectable! I ate like all of them! 😀

Made em last night. Awesome!
great recipie!
i am only 11 years old and i really like to cook. the only problem is that most recipies are difficult and require many ingrediants.
this recipie is so quick and easy!!!
everybody in my family loves this recipie!
add chocolate chips and it is perfect.
lovely!
Awesome recipe. Everyone on my street loves these muffins!
Try adding a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter! its great

I just made these muffins and they were very good! I still can’t believe how easy the preparation was!
Thanks for the recipe….I will be making these often…
i am cooking these as i right and i am hoping that they work cause i did everything right but i made into a loaf instead of muffins so….
These are great! I mixed some shredded apple into the first batch, along with some wheat germ and almond meal … YUM! The second batch I didn’t use bananas at all, just shredded apples and then added a little nutmeg, wheat germ, chopped walnuts, and dried cranberries! Awesome!!!
I made these and brought them to work and people could not just eat one! Awesome easy recipe. I will add nuts and top with cinnamon and br sugar next time! Thanks!
These are great easy and really nice, i agree with the less sugar a whole cup would be too much and for people not using farenhite it is 180 degree c for 20 mins, also instead of using plain flour, bi carb and baking soda I used self raising flour worked just a well. =) yummy!
FINALLY – a successful batch of muffins!! They are delicious even if I do say so myself, my children loved them. I used 3/4 cup sugar, and 4 bananas and added a tsp of vanilla and the walnuts, bit risky for me to try and be ‘adventurous’ with cooking but they turned out great. Thank you
My roomate made them with the original recipe and i made the “healthier” version (although we still both added chocolate chips, haha). I just replaced the oil with un-sweetened apple sauce (i hear you can also use fat free plain yogurt), and the sugar with splenda. They both tasted great, and you could hardly tell the difference! I’m making another batch now!
I love to play with recipes, so I’m making 6 banana nut (I’m just putting the nuts on top of the muffins) Banana strawberry and the Banana split recipe Cat gave above(chocolate chips, banana, strawberry) :)(goes to kitchen to pull out first batch) Amazing!!! It gets a bit heated in my apartment, so I had the windows open, and My neighbor, smelled them and came over 🙂 They are great!!! mix it up!
what flour do you guys use, plain/all purpose/self raising etc ?
i am thinking of making these tonight, going shopping in a bit.
i tried to baked banana muffins…….my husband loves it! and it was so easy and simple….thanks…
it’s taste amazing…..i tried to put some hazelnuts.
